#breakingnews What you need to know about Flu http://t.co/f5UQXNhV #rovedin
Between the years 1918 and 1920 the world experienced an influenza pandemic that killed at least 20 million people, with most of the victims being healthy young adults. Then in the 1930s, U.S. researchers developed the first experimental influenza vaccine.
While there have been several influenza pandemic scares since then, hundreds of thousands of people around the world die each year from influenza. Therefore it should not be taken lightly. But the vaccine could, in large part, be credited with preventing pandemics.
Flu season is here yet again. Dr. Thomas R. Blackledge is a medical doctor who specializes in family medicine at Medical Center in Magee. He offers his advice on getting the flu vaccine.
While he is a qualified medical doctor, his opinion is one of many and therefore is not definitive of the medical profession.
WHO?IS?MOST?AT?RISK?FOR?THE?FLU AND?WHY?
The most at risk people are elderly and those with compromised immune systems like a chronic illness or cancer, anyone in a situation where their immune system is not completely 100 percent.
ARE?CHILDREN?AT?RISK?TOO?
Children under one are most at risk too. This includes newborns and premature babies.
WHAT ARE?THE?SYMPTOMS?OF?INFLUENZA?
Significant fever - usually in the 103 or 104 range, body aches; and in extreme cases, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Typical course of the flu is three days to a week, depending how healthy you are.
WHO?BENEFITS?FROM?THE?FLU?SHOT?AND?WHY?
Everyone benefits from the flu shot because you have less time off from work, and it’s less expensive from seeing the doctor. Everyone benefits but obviously those who are most at risk would benefit. .
HOW?EFFECTIVE?IS?THE?VACCINE?
This year, a little disappointed in the effectiveness. some people have gotten the flu despite getting the vaccine, but he effects were mild.
It’s not 100 percent effective and it varies from year to year because the CDC bases their influenza vaccine on the most popular types of flu they think will occur next season.
And it never will be 100 percent effective. Many different strains of lnfluenza exist so there is no way to make vaccines for all of them. viruses replicate and mutate and in the process they become resistant to treatment.
WHAT?IS?THE?VACCINE?MADE?OF?
A deactivated polysaccharide protein. not a live virus. but a portion of the virus protein. The body reacts to the protein by forming antibodies to the protein itself. The antibodies destroy the protein.
HOW?DOES?THE?VACCINE?WORK
Because the antibodies are preformed formed from the vaccine, they are ready to attack the virus should the person get the real flu. You basically teach your body to get ready to recognize and react to the protein by inducing some of that protein and causing a reaction.
EVEN?WITH?THE? VACCINE,?DO?YOU?STILL?GET?A?LITTLE?SICK?
With the flu vaccine, you should not even get a little bit sick, but just a reaction to the protein, which can make some people feel a little bad at times. But the vaccine symptoms should be very mild. You may become sore afterwards because it is the body’s reaction to the protein.
WHAT?IS?THE?BEST?METHOD?FOR?VACCINATION?
So far two methods: injection and intranasal, which is relatively new. The new option could be just as effective, it hasn’t been around long enough to show how effective it is.
The nasal method is quite a bit more expensive because it is new, and probably as effective but will probably be a long time before we can say that with any level of confidence.
WHAT?IS?SO?DEADLY?ABOUT?INFLUENZA? HOW?DOES?IT?KILL?
The flu isn’t deadly for a normal healthy person. the reason why we have deaths is because a person is in a immuno-compromised state--elderly, cancer patients, children, etc.
It’s really not the flu, it’s the complications of having the flu that can lead to death. The flu can lead to further diseases that can kill.
WHY?DO?WE NEED?A?FLU?SHOT?INSTEAD?OF?USING?OUR?NATURAL?DEFENSES?
Because of the fact that you can fight it off with the flu vaccine. and a full blown case of flu is not a small thing. there is a significant amount of discomfort, loss of work, loss of school.
There is a tremendous amount of expense in missed school and miss work. A healthy person can just stay home and ride it out but they shouldn’t be at work or school spreading flu.
It’s mostly a socio-economic issue, in addition to the discomfort.
HOW?MANY?PEOPLE?COME?TO?YOU?EACH SEASON?FOR?A?FLU SHOT?
A great deal, maybe 25 percent to 50 percent of his patients have come in for a flu vaccination. we have a lot of room for improvement. our patients will sometimes get vaccinated at an outside facility or at work.
HOW?MANY?PEOPLE?DO?YOU?TREAT?EACH?YEAR?FOR?INFLUENZA?
It varies; last year not so much, but this year a tremendous amount, at least 100.
WHAT?WOULD?YOU?TELL?SOMEONE?WHO?DOUBTS?THE?EFFECTIVENESS?OF?A?FLU?SHOT?
I would tell them that they could check the research online. They could check the CDC’s website and they are in charge fo the flu vaccine and it’s distribution. Start with the CDC website to see how safe and effective it is, that would be a good site to start.
